Hi, my name is Alena, and I am here to guide you through life’s challenges. Life isn’t always easy—it can bring uncertainty, stress, anxiety, deep sadness, grief, and heartbreak. In these moments, we are often left to navigate overwhelming emotions and insecurities. Sometimes, we can feel different from others or not good enough. If you find yourself struggling, I am here to support you, offering a safe space to talk, gain clarity, and rebuild your strength.
During my internship, I have gained experience working with clients of all ages in private practice, Telehealth, and Autism SA. I have a particular passion for supporting autistic individuals and those facing challenges with emotional regulation, anxiety, attention, and learning. My goal is to empower individuals by helping them recognize their strengths, develop strategies to navigate challenges, and foster resilience and self-acceptance.
I hold an Honours degree in Psychology from the University of Adelaide and a Master of Professional Psychology from La Trobe University. Before transitioning into psychology, I had a fulfilling career in medical research, which deepened my curiosity about the brain and the intricate connection between the body and mind. This passion has led me to incorporate neurofeedback therapy into my practice, along with a strong interest in how nutrition, gut health, and lifestyle influence mental health. I take a holistic approach, considering the whole person—mind and body—to promote lasting balance and well-being.
Therapy
I strive to create a warm, empathetic, and non-judgmental environment where clients feel safe and supported. My therapeutic style is collaborative and client-centred, incorporating evidence-based approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. When working with neurodivergent individuals, I adopt a neuro-affirming approach that respects and celebrates their unique ways of thinking and experiencing the world.
In addition to therapy, I conduct learning and cognitive assessments for children and adults. I understand that the assessment process can feel daunting, so I create a supportive and relaxed environment to help clients perform at their best. My goal is to provide meaningful insights that enhance self-understanding and guide future learning and personal development.
Assessments
Psycho-educational assessments
This type of assessment is used to diagnose Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia. It can also help to identify yours or your child’s learning profile (cognitive strengths and weaknesses) often to better understand the reasons behind a learning difficulty and appropriate educational recommendations. I offer these assessments for both children and adults (ages from 4 upwards). They are suitable for students at primary school, secondary school and at university or other post-secondary education settings.
Cognitive assessments for giftedness and identifying strengths and weaknesses
I offer assessments for advanced learners for early school entry, or to better understand yours or your child’s academic and educational needs (ages 3 and upwards).
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) assessments
I offer a comprehensive evaluation of attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity in children, teenagers, and adults, i.e. ADHD assessments for ages 6 and upwards. The process includes clinical interviews, behavioural questionnaires, and input from parents, teachers, or partners to assess symptoms across different settings. I will provide you with a comprehensive and personalised written report with strategies to better cope with the daily challenges, and enhance learning, relationships, and overall well-being.
Assessment to diagnose an Intellectual Disability
In this assessment, I explore an individual’s intellectual ability and functioning in day- to-day life activities. This type of assessment is usually requested to identify the need for educational support/modified curriculum, entry to special education, and eligibility for intellectual disability support (ages 3 to 40).
I begin each assessment with an initial consultation to discuss the background history (1hour). We will then complete various tasks either using iPad administration or pencil and paper tasks. There are usually several tasks to complete, and this part of the assessment usually takes around 2 hours. If it is appropriate, additional questionnaires are completed before the next session. At the final session (1 hour), we discuss the outcomes of the assessment and answer any further questions you may have.
