Therapeutic Approach
Fergus approaches each session by aiming to listen carefully, identify problems or issues, and apply evidenced-based psychotherapies to create meaningful and lasting improvement or change. He knows that seeking help is an act of bravery and vulnerability and he hopes to provide high quality support that leads to lifelong change.
Fergus understands that life can be full of challenges and pressures which can be caused by or present themselves at school, university, work or home. He believes that improving mental health is crucial to living a balanced and happy life.
Fergus strives to ensure that his clients feel safe and supported. He tailors his approach to suit each client and works using an ‘other person centered’ and conversational approach.
Fergus uses a present, practical and outcome focused approach designed to provide each client with high quality information, actionable steps and a sense of real engagement and change. He uses a collaborative and workshop style often using handouts and/or ‘workshopping’ issues using a whiteboard. Fergus often refers clients to additional sources of information and support such as books and websites.
Fergus welcomes working across the lifespan. He emphasises the connection between client and therapist because research shows that this is critical to successful outcomes.
Fergus apply these evidenced based approaches:
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
- Attachment Theory
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Family Systems Therapy
- Positive Psychology
