With the recent expansion of the team at Attuned Psychology to include two new practitioners, I am pleased to introduce you to our newest member of the team, Selma van Diest, Clinical Psychologist. Watch out for another blog soon on our other new practitioner who has joined the team, Jane Fitzgerald who joins Liz Kernahan in providing child psychology and family therapy services.

We are excited to officially welcome Selma van Diest to the team at Attuned Psychology in North Adelaide. Already after being here for 2 weeks, Selma has already made a fantastic impact at the practice and on the clients she has met. With her incredible energy, passion and enthusiasm in addition to her strong expertise, Selma is set to make a significant contribution to the team and we look forward to more interesting conversations, presentations and insights from her as the months pass. A large number of community members had the pleasure of meeting her on Tuesday November 13th at the launch of our new monthly series of discussion forums in National Psychology Week. “Living Mindfully: The Art of Being Present” was the title for our first successful discussion forum and Selma provided some valuable insights into the application of mindfulness to our intimate relationships.

To give you a little more information about Selma’s background, Selma van Diest has trained and worked in the Netherlands and we are privileged to have her come on board at Attuned Psychology with her unique skill set, empathy and infectious personality that will only inspire others. Selma has worked extensively in both private practice and hospital contexts and has enjoyed the challenge of working with people with issues such as depression, anxiety, trauma, grief and loss and the impact of chronic health conditions. She is experienced in dealing with adolescents, adults and couples and is also also able to provide consultations in Dutch.

In addition to being trained in Clinical and Health Psychology, Selma also has a Masters in Sexology, giving her expert knowledge and experience in helping individuals and couples deal with sexual issues. As a Sex Therapist and Clinical Psychologist, she is one of a handful of practitioners in Adelaide who specialise in assisting people with sexuality, intimacy and relationship issues. Selma counsels a wide variety of people with sexual problems including those with low sexual desire or overactive sexual desire, partners who have differences in sexual desire, sexual arousal problems, problems with getting an erection, premature ejaculation, pain during intercourse and vaginismus.

I would encourage you to watch out for future blogs where Selma will share some of her insights based on the work she does each day. Many people have strong myths about what sex therapists do and how they work, so watch this space as we do our best to break down those barriers and improve your understanding of this particular field. So if you are curious and want a decent answer to the question “What is sex therapy?” or “What does a sex therapist do? or if you want to know more about some of these specific issues above, then make sure you keep an eye out for Selma’s blogs in the future.
