Welcoming Tracy Quinney – Our new full time psychologist

October 10, 2018

As the Director of Attuned Psychology, I am excited to welcome the latest new member of our team, Tracy Quinney, Psychologist who started with us in September. Tracy brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the team having worked in both government and private practice in both clinical and management roles in NSW, Northern Territory and Tasmania prior to moving to South Australia. Tracy’s full time presence at Attuned across our two locations will allow us to continue the commitment to providing more choice of practitioners, accessible services during both business hours and after hours and extensive clinical experience that will benefit our community.

About Tracy Quinney – The Therapeutic Relationship

Tracy has a genuine, warm and collaborative style of working and an ability to make people of all ages and backgrounds feel comfortable quickly. One of the things that struck me about Tracy immediately was her warmth and compassion and her passion for the work she does with all her clients. Her emphasis on creating a safe space for clients and building a strong therapeutic relationship, in addition to her values of honouring clients’ strengths and insights, instilled a confidence in me that she would be truly attuned to the needs of clients.

We know from research over many years that the quality of the therapeutic relationship is the largest factor in treatment outcome so this is something I look for as a priority when choosing new psychologists for the team. It is also a fundamental value of mine that has shaped the practice; to work collaboratively and respectively with all clients, to show empathy and to listen to their needs rather than assume what they need or want out of therapy.

Successful therapy is not all about having knowledge and skills and knowing the right techniques. So much of the change is facilitated due to how the relationship works so finding the right fit for you is important to maximise the likelihood of achieving change and to feel comfortable with being open and vulnerable.

I am so pleased to see how Tracy has slotted in to the team and how well clients are responding to her approach. It certainly says that following your intuition is often smart. I think that our intuition which operates from the right part of our brain often knows what’s best for us even when our thinking minds do not understand yet what’s going on.

Tracy – Experience and Areas of practice

Tracy completed her undergraduate and post graduate training in Psychology at Monash University and Charles Sturt University 20 years ago and has worked in a range of roles since across Australia both in metropolitan and rural communities. Her clinical work has been diverse working with families, carers, children, adolescents, adults and couples.

Tracy like all of our practitioners at Attuned has a clear passion for working as a psychologist and has indicated that her goal is to facilitate, enhance and reclaim people’s ability to realise their full potential in an open, non judgmental, safe environment.

Tracy does this by focusing on understanding her client through their life circumstances and personal narrative and uses evidence based therapy tailored to the client to support outcomes such as greater resilience, better decision making, independence, new ways of thinking, regulating emotions and improving relationship patterns. Tracy draws on the unique strengths of each clients utilising Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness and Family Systems Therapy, in addition to being strongly influenced by an understanding of attachment theory and the effects of trauma.

Tracy has extensive experience in working with adults with many clinical issues including anxiety, depression, interpersonal difficulties, trauma, work place issues, bullying, sexual assault and adjusting to life transitions. Tracy has also had extensive phone counselling experience supporting nurses in rural communities providing invaluable insights into the challenges that people face in rural areas where services are lacking and knowing how to support them. We look forward to Tracy providing telehealth services for those entitled to access services in certain areas given this experience makes her a great fit for this work.

Tracy also has extensive experience in child and adolescent psychology and works with children, adolescents, families and carers in a flexible way to ensure that the issues presented are always seen in the context of the family and other systems such as school.

Tracy is committed to providing a safe therapeutic environment for her young clients, families and carers and is interested in understanding behavioural and emotional responses in the context of life experience so that new patterns may emerge with greater understanding of these links. Tracy has extensive experience in child development and attachment theory and utilises a strength based approach in developing skills and coping strategies to regulate emotions and navigate social and educational settings. She brings a warm, engaging, fun energy to the room with children that allows children and teens to feel safe and open up in their own creative ways. Her combination of warmth, humour and sensitivity allow her to join with them at their level and establish a positive supportive relationship for them.
