Attuned Collective: A Holistic Approach to Artists’ Mental Health

Studies in Australia and overseas consistently show that people in the arts experience higher rates of depression, anxiety, and problematic substance use than the general population.

According to multiple national surveys (Eynde et al., 2016; Support Act, 2022), mental distress among artists can be more than twice as prevalent as in other industries, with ongoing issues such as low income, unstable work conditions, and intense performance pressures.

Recent data also highlights significantly elevated levels of suicidal thinking, underscoring the need for more targeted, evidence-based support across all creative sectors.

Performance Anxiety in Perspective

Although artists face many stressors, performance anxiety remains one of the most frequently reported and debilitating challenges, affecting musicians, dancers, visual artists, actors, and more.

Many resort to immediate coping methods—such as beta-blockers, alcohol, or distraction—yet research shows that professional interventions, especially those designed around the unique demands of the arts, can lead to better, longer-lasting outcomes.

Both Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) have proved highly effective in reducing anxiety and promoting healthy coping strategies. Moreover, group-based or coaching approaches often reduce stigma by helping performers normalise shared concerns about stage fright and mental wellbeing.

Introducing The Attuned Collective

The Attuned Collective was founded by psychologist and professional vocalist Alexandra Frost, whose Master’s thesis research (Frost, 1997) focused on therapeutic interventions for musical performance anxiety.

Over years of clinical practice, she saw that anxiety, depression, burnout, and addiction were deeply interwoven challenges for artists, yet most mental health services weren’t tailored to their unpredictable schedules, irregular income, and intense job demands.

A new literature review was carried out, supported by a grant from the South Australian Mental Health Commissioner.

Their findings confirmed the critical need for a dedicated, artist-centred service, building on global evidence that performers benefit most when therapy and guidance are sensitive to their creative lives.

A Multidisciplinary Team

What makes the Attuned Collective distinctive is its diverse membership of psychologists, art and dance therapists, social workers, and other allied health professionals.

Many of us have our own backgrounds in performing or visual arts. We blend various therapeutic models—from CBT and ACT to mindfulness-based and somatic approaches—to ensure an adaptable service for individual artists’ needs.

Our goal is to evolve over time to address physical demands as well, creating a mind–body approach that supports the whole person.

Whether you are grappling with career uncertainty, performance anxiety, relationship pressures, or mental health concerns like depression and addiction, our multi-perspective framework is designed to meet you where you are.

Shaping a More Supportive Future

In addition to offering direct therapeutic services, the Attuned Collective aims to create a best-practice model for artist wellbeing—one that could be expanded statewide or even nationally.

By collaborating with schools, universities, and arts organisations, we hope to incorporate early mental health education for younger creatives, provide ongoing support for established professionals, and encourage open conversations about wellbeing in an industry that often overlooks its own vulnerabilities.

Ultimately, we envision a culture in which seeking psychological or physical help is as routine as warming up before a performance.
